Former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu was found guilty of committing two offenses in the ongoing Ksh588 million corruption case.
On Wednesday, he appeared before Chief Magistrate Thomas Nzioki at the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court.
Along with his co-accused, Waititu was deemed guilty of multiple crimes, including a conflict of interest, awarding tenders without approval from the County Assembly, and document forgery, among others.
During the ruling, Chief Magistrate Nzioki found Waititu guilty of both conflict of interest and involvement with suspect property. “As for the offenses as charged, I find the accused persons guilty as charged,” Nzioki stated.
The magistrate’s decision was based on 12 charges, most of which involved the former governor and his co-accused being found responsible for undermining the law.
“Count one, the first accused person (Waititu) is guilty; count two, the first accused person and Saika Two Estate Developers Limited are guilty; count three, the first accused person and Saika Developers Limited are guilty,” part of the ruling read.
The Chief Magistrate then emphasized, “The inevitable conclusion is that the first accused person is guilty in count number one for conflict of interest, having acquired an indirect personal interest in a sum of Ksh25 million.”
Nzioki, who had initially ruled in September 2022 that the accused had a case to answer, concluded that Waititu, along with his wife and other county officials, faced corruption charges in the Ksh588 million scandal.
Additionally, they were accused of fraud, conflict of interest, handling suspect property, money laundering, and abuse of office related to the illegal awarding of tenders to a company owned by the Waititu family.
