Eldoret police are investigating a tragic incident in which a cancer patient who went missing from a hospital was later found dead, his body mauled by dogs.
According to Uasin Gishu County Police Commander Benjamin Mwanthi, the 53-year-old male patient, who was suffering from throat cancer, had been admitted to the hospital but disappeared on the night of January 21, 2025.
The disappearance was reported by both the hospital and the patient’s family, prompting police to launch a search operation.
However, days later, his remains were discovered in a bushy area near a river close to the hospital. His body had been severely damaged by stray dogs, with large portions eaten and decomposing to near skeletal form.
“DCI officers are still investigating the incident, but the patient was identified, and his family has been informed,” Mwanthi stated.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the patient removed his hospital garments, changed into his clothes, and left the hospital unnoticed during the night. His body was eventually located almost a kilometer away from the ward where he had been receiving treatment.
Authorities are questioning how the patient managed to exit the hospital undetected, particularly through the rear side, and why security personnel did not notice him leaving.
“We have recorded statements at the hospital to establish what happened and whether there was any negligence,” Mwanthi said.
After the body was discovered, police called his family to the scene before transferring it to a local morgue. Investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding his disappearance and tragic death.
