A significant shakeup in government is on the horizon as President William Ruto moves to restructure his administration.

Among the 109 individuals shortlisted for Principal Secretary (PS) positions are prominent figures from diverse political backgrounds.

Notable Shortlisted Candidates:

  • Ann Kananu – Former Nairobi Governor
  • Wilson Sossion – Former MP
  • Abdullahi Diriye – Former MP
  • Dr. Caroline Karugu – Former Nyeri Deputy Governor and ally of Raila Odinga
  • Dr. Patrick Amoth – Current Director General for Health
  • Dr. Andrew Mulwa – Former acting CEO of KEMSA
  • Nicholas Muraguri – Former Principal Secretary
  • Fredrick Ouma Oluga – Ex-Secretary General, KMPDU
  • David Osianyi – Former Chief Administrative Secretary
  • Gabriel Oguda – ODM blogger

The Public Service Commission (PSC) revealed that 2,517 individuals applied for these coveted positions. Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed on dates to be announced later.

This reshuffle is seen as part of President Ruto’s strategy to build a broad-based government by incorporating members from the opposition, particularly allies of ODM leader Raila Odinga and former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Opposition Inclusion

The inclusion of opposition figures is attributed to the political fallout following nationwide Gen Z protests and the impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Reports suggest that Mr. Odinga’s camp may receive at least 10 PS slots.

Recent Appointments Highlighting Opposition Allies

  • Wenwa Akinyi – Chairperson, Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute
  • Prof. Adams Oloo – Advisor, Strategy and Communication in the President’s Council of Economic Advisors
  • Joe Ager – Secretary, Governance
  • Dr. Sylvester Okumu Kasuku – Advisor, Governance

These appointments reflect a shift towards inclusivity, with President Ruto relying on Mr. Odinga’s support in Parliament and for political leverage during Mr. Gachagua’s ouster.

Broader Implications

The anticipated reshuffle will likely extend to parastatal heads and ambassadorial roles, consolidating President Ruto’s efforts to foster a cohesive government while accommodating opposition voices.

Observers believe this realignment marks a critical moment in Kenyan politics, underscoring the balance between political pragmatism and governance priorities.
