The death of a man who was arrested and detained at the Kamukunji police station in Nairobi is currently under investigation by the Police and the Independent Policing Oversight Authority.
Boniface Mutembei was taken into custody on the night of May 29 for alleged disorderly conduct in the area.
According to fellow detainees, Mutembei had complained of feeling unwell while in custody.
On Thursday morning, Mutembei collapsed in his cell after experiencing convulsions and epileptic seizures.
His cellmates called for help, prompting the police on duty to respond and find him unconscious but still breathing.
He was immediately taken to Kenyatta National Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
The body was moved to the mortuary pending autopsy and other investigations.
Nairobi police boss Adamson Bungei said they are investigating the incident, which he termed unfortunate.
“That is a life lost and we will establish what happened and why,” he said.
IPOA has been informed of the incident and has joined the probe.
They will among others grill the cellmates who were present, the police on duty and the family of the deceased.
In Yatta, Machakos, police are investigating the death of a man whose body was found floating in River Athi.
The body was found in Kathithu village and taken to a local mortuary.
In the same area, the body of Joseph Ngao Muli was found lying near his home.
Police found a lifeless body, which had no visible injuries and moved it to the mortuary pending autopsy and other investigations.
The cause of the death of the man is yet to be known.
