After weeks of silence and absence from public life, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua made a dramatic return to the political stage with a fiery speech that has reignited debate over his political future and relationship with President William Ruto.
Gachagua made his first public appearance on Saturday, November 1, 2025, during a funeral service in Murang’a County for six family members who perished in a tragic road accident.
Addressing mourners, the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader issued a stark warning to members of his community, alleging that there were plans to harm them — particularly targeting the youth.
“Our community must beware and know that we are in big trouble. I want to emphasise that any leader who is harming our children will not be accepted here,” Gachagua declared.
“I also want to tell you that President William Ruto is planning very bad things for our community. The things he is doing for us are very harmful.”
The former deputy president, however, did not provide any evidence to support his claims, sparking mixed reactions from political observers and Kenyans online.
Explains His Silence
Gachagua also used the occasion to address his recent disappearance from public events and social media, explaining that his silence was deliberate.
He said he had chosen to step back from active politics to observe unfolding national events and reflect on the current political climate.
“As you are aware, I have been silent for over two weeks and a lot has happened within that period,” he said.
“A Kikuyu proverb says that sometimes, even if you know how to sing, you may choose to remain silent — not because you can’t sing, but because you want to observe.”
The former deputy president’s remarks come after a period of controversy and political tension. His troubles began shortly before the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, when he made comments perceived as insensitive regarding Odinga’s health.
Following the opposition leader’s passing, Gachagua was notably absent from all national mourning ceremonies — including those held at Kasarani Stadium, Parliament Buildings, Kisumu, and Bondo — further fueling speculation about his political standing.
Political Implications
Gachagua’s return to the public eye, marked by open criticism of President Ruto, signals what could be a deepening political rift between the two leaders. His newly formed Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) appears to be the platform from which he intends to reassert his political relevance.
As he re-emerges, analysts suggest that Gachagua may be positioning himself as a defender of his community’s interests — a move that could reshape Kenya’s political landscape in the coming months.
