Embattled Mugithi singer DJ Fatxo has become a number-one trending topic across Kenyan social media platforms after a young interior designer died in his house.
According to police records, 23-year-old Geoffrey Mwathi, alias Jeff, fatally fell from the 12th floor of a residential building named Redwood Apartments, around Safari Park Estate. Some are claiming suicide but his mother has refuted those claims.
Jeff had been in DJ Faxto’s house after spending the night partying with the popular Mugithi singer alongside his cousin and driver.
Reports indicate that Jeff had met the singer hours earlier for an interior design job and that he had been promised a down payment to begin work that same morning.
After the business meeting had wrapped up, it is recorded that Jeff joined DJ Fatxo for drinks and merry-making as they hit more than three clubs in one night, eventually ending up at Redwood Apartments some minutes past 3 am.
A few minutes past 5 am, Jeff would later be captured on CCTV cameras falling from the singer’s house window to his grisly death.
Now, the man known for making club hits is working with the police who are investigating the mysterious death.
“My client is cooperating with the ongoing investigations, all the times that he has been summoned to appear since the death of Geoffrey, he has been available,” Charles Mugane, his lawyer told Inooro TV.
DJ Fatxo background
DJ Faxto was born Lawrence Njuguna in Nyandarua County, a county that has also produced some of the best Mugithi singers.
The only child in his family, DJ Faxto is married with one child.
DJ Fatxo career
Before launching his music career, DJ Faxto was, indeed, a disc jokey who played at small-time establishments around Ruiru before he got his big break at KU TV where he was the resident DJ.
He was also a regular at some of Ruiru’s most popular night spots.
But it is while at KU TV that he met the now-defunct Sailors Gang, a Gengetone group which shortly made him their official DJ.
His stint with Sailors Gang, however, was short-lived and, during that time, the DJ’s singing bug bit him and a surprise music career would be born.
DJ Fatxo songs
DJ Faxto went on to release his first single ‘Ndi Mang’a’ (I’m totally drunk) to a surprisingly wild reception from fans.
The song, released in 2020, quickly made DJ Fatxo incredibly famous, with the music video, in which he introduced his signature flame-haired look, quickly lapping up hundreds of thousands of views in weeks.
‘Ndi Mang’a’ now stands at an impressive 4.4 million views on YouTube.
Not so long after, Fatxo, known for infusing comedic elements into his music, released the equally-popular hit ‘Inji Ikaaga’.
That same year, land acquisition firm Lesedi Developers made DJ Fatxo their official brand ambassador. His contract would be extended a year later.
As his career grew, DJ Faxto continued to release more music and perform at countless top-rated Mugithi spots alongside his Kikuyu contemporaries, with fully-booked weekend gigs choking his schedule.
Later, he would team up with yet another popular Kikuyu singer and instrumentalist Davy Kamoko with whom he collaborated on the smash hit ‘Mwomboko’.
The song, which now has 6.2 million views on YouTube, further solidified Faxto’s brand and introduced him to a new niche of Mugithi fans – accordion lovers.
As with any popular celebrity, rumours about him started swirling.
DJ Fatxo dating politician
In January 2022, DJ Faxto was said to have been dating a popular Murang’a female politician and was said to have been gifted a brand new Mercedes Benz by the scandal-prone politician. He denied the claims.
On 2Mbili TV, the channel owner, comedian 2mbili, asked him about the rumours.
“I wish, we cannot argue over issues that do not make sense. I respect her so much as a politician and actually I don’t even have a photo with her. We do not have even a single photo together as friends or even during campaigns, we do not have any,” he said.
“Yes, we have met and know each other because my manager Mutema calls her aunt. So, I will be very honest with you, we respect one another very much such that the only interaction activities we have are in the line of duty, and we only exchange greetings.”
Last year on Valentine’s Day, the DJ unveiled the new house he had built for his parents and seven days later, gifted his wife with a brand new car.
“Somebody help me wish this pretty soul a Happy Birthday. I promised myself that I would come back for those that starved with me. Enjoy your new machine and never stop praying for your boyfriend,” the musician posted.
He also gushed about his parents and thanked them for raising a “son like him”, saying in part, “Thank you, Mom, for showing me how to be kind to everyone. Thank you, Dad, for showing me how to be strong in the bad times. I owe so much to both of you! Everything that I learned in life is from you two.”
On December 26, 2022, DJ Fatxo and his wife were blessed with a baby boy. As is his tradition, he shared the news of the baby’s arrival with his fans and received thousands of congratulatory messages.
As Kenyans ushered in the new year (2023), the singer was en route to Embu for a club performance when he was involved in a minor road accident which left his Subaru Forester badly mangled on the left side.
He would almost immediately share the bad news with his fans, saying, “The Devil is a liar. We will see the Year 2023. Somebody Hit Us & Ran. My driver couldn’t stop the car but all thanks to God we are safe. 2023 we are seeing you in Jesus Name… Somebody say Amen!”.
DJ Fatxo’s other hits include Nindetikira, Tokonyo, Mwopiano and his latest Biribiri.
Will Fatxo’s career take a break as he deals with the unfortunate death of Jeff at his house?
