Love was in the air on Monday night as Kyrie Irving made his home debut as a member of the Dallas Mavericks.
But, fans soon learned they were also guests at a wedding.
On Monday night, the Dallas Mavericks hosted an event that had never been seen before in the history of the NBA halftime show.
Reid Malone and Ellyn Piatt, two die-hard Mavs fans, tied the knot in front of a packed crowd at the American Airlines Center.
The ceremony was conducted by Mark Followill, the Mavericks’ TV play-by-play announcer, who is also an ordained minister.
The couple had met at a Mavs game in December 2021 when Malone proposed to Piatt at midcourt.
When the Mavericks heard about the proposal, they contacted the couple and offered to host their wedding at the AAC.
The couple said yes, and on Monday night, the arena filled with the sounds of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra playing the introduction and first dance music for the newlyweds.
The couple was escorted to the center court, where they were married in front of a crowd and a live television audience. Followill, the officiant, dropped several basketball puns during the ceremony, making it a truly unique experience for the newlyweds.
The Mavericks, were hosting Kyrie Irving’s home debut that night, were delighted to be able to give the couple an extra special day.
The couple celebrated the night with their families and friends and with their new Mavs family. Malone and Piatt are the first couples to be married during an NBA game, and they will always have a special place in Mavericks’ history.
It just goes to show that anything is possible when it comes to true love, and the Mavericks were more than happy to provide the perfect venue for Malone and Piatt to declare their love for one another.
