Kenyans celebrate Mashujaa Day, which took the place of Kenyatta Day, as a day to recognize all Kenyans who actively supported Kenya’s independence movement or have since continued to do so.
The occasion commemorates the moment the nation gained its independence from its British colonial rulers.
It would be President William Ruto’s first occasion doing so in his dual roles as commander in chief of the armed forces and president of the Republic of Kenya, as the 59th Mashujaa Day celebrations are taking place at Uhuru Gardens this year.
