Kenyans have until Friday, September 16, to give the Kenya Revenue Authority their opinions on the inflation adjustment (KRA).
KRA welcomed the general public to participate in the adjusting of the excise duty or export levy.
The opinions must be expressed in a public notice dated September 1, 2022, and be delivered to Githii Mburu, Commissioner General of KRA.
“The Commissioner General will adjust the specific rates of taxes applicable to excisable goods, which are charged excise duty at a specific rate per unit under the Excise Duty Act, 2015, and other goods subject to fees or levies at a specific rate under the Miscellaneous Fees and Levies Act, 2016,” read the notice in part.
The tax man is expected to impose a 6.3% tax on excisable goods and services by October 1, 2022.
The Excise Duty Act 2015 proposes an adjustment in excise duty every year in consideration of the cost of living.
Kenya’s inflation hit a record 8.5% in August 2022, up from 8.3% reported in July 2022 because of rising food prices.
The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) attributed the increase in inflation to the rising food and fuel prices.
