Wajir Presiding Officer Amputated on The Leg after He was Shot for Refusing to Alter Results

Doctors have amputated the leg of an IEBC presiding officer in Wajir, who was shot for refusing to commit elections malpractice.

Mohamed Kanyare had been assigned to preside the voting process at the Townheed polling station, Eldas Constituency, Wajir County.

A Witness alleged that a candidate wanted Kanyare to alter results recorded in form 34 A, but Kanyare refused, owing to his integrity personality.

According to the witness, Kanyare’s move infuriated the candidate and his supporters, who resolved to attack Kanyare at the polling station.

He explained that the attackers switched off the lights when Kanyare was handing over the document to the deputy presiding officer. They then shot Kanyare on his right leg at a very close range.

“Inside the CDF Hall, when he was about to hand over the forms and gadgets to the deputy returning officer, someone switched off the lights and Kanyare was shot at close range,” explained the witness, as recorded by Nation Africa.

The incident led to the postponing of the polling process since other two people had been injured.

Kanyare was rushed to Wajir County Hospital, where the doctors determined that his leg was in an irreversible condition and decided to amputate it to save his life.

Kanyare’s amputation is another sad story of how IEBC officials are being targeted after refusing to commit election malpractice.

On August 15, the body of Daniel Mbolu Musyoka, the returning officer of Embakasi East Constituency, was found dumped in Kilombero Forest in Loitoktok. Musyoka had been reported missing for five days before his body was found.

In 2017, IEBC ICT manager Chris Msando was also murdered in unclear circumstances.

Investigations in Musyoka and Msando’s cases are still ongoing.
