Tourism CS Najib Balala has appointed media personalities Trevor Ombija and Jane Ngoiri to major roles in the ministry.
According to a Gazette article, Trevor and Jane are among the most recent recipients, joining a long list of distinguished Kenyans. Others include Jomo Gecaga, Uhuru Kenyatta’s nephew.
“Honorary Wildlife Wardens are volunteer conservationists drawn from various fields to assist in the conservation of wildlife using their various areas of expertise.
“The Cabinet Secretary, @Min_TourismKE, Hon. @tunajibu, has made 17 appointments for Honorary Wardens (HW),” read a notice by KWS.
Hon. Najib Balala, Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife, attended the Kenya Wildlife Service’s (KWS) second Honorary Wardens Conference on July 27, 2022, which was hosted at the Safari Park Hotel in Nairobi.
Hon. Balala explained the conference’s theme of “Wildlife Conservation Stewardship in the 21st Century” to Honorary Wardens in attendance.
In addition to congratulating them on their appointment, he emphasized that the title carried a heavy burden because serving as an Honorary Warden is a prestige job in Kenya.
Balala asserted that the Kenyan government, via KWS, had chosen to be more active in the management of conservation areas, claiming that such appointments were one of the tried-and-true techniques to accomplish greater conservation milestones.
