Tanzania Launches Electric SGR Train That Moves At To Speed of 160 km/h, Compared to Kenya’s 120 km/h

Tanzania has begun testing its first electric Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) train between Dar es Salaam and Morogoro.

In comparison to Kenya’s SGR, which runs on diesel and can travel up to 120 km/h, the Tanzanian SGR reached a top speed of 160 km/h.

Once it is put into operation, it is anticipated that the new SGR train would be able to move at a speed of 160 kilometers per hour, or roughly twice the speed of a regular bus.

Between Dar es Salaam City and Morogoro Station, there is a 300-kilometer SRG line.

Through their official social media accounts, Tanzania’s Chief Government Spokesperson published a brief video of the electric SGR during its initial test on Sunday.

Phase Two of the railway line spans 422 kilometers from Morogoro to Makutupora.

Another recently revealed Phase Three goal is to build a 294-kilometer track between Makutupora and Tabora Town.

From there, the nation will start the Fourth Phase, a 130-kilometer route connecting Tabora and Isaka.

The branching point will be in Isaka. In Phase Four, an additional 249 kilometers will be added to this arm, bringing the internal Dar to Lake Zone SGR network to a close.

Given that it will be spending almost half as much as Kenya did to develop the first phase of the railroad from Mombasa to Nairobi, Tanzania appears to have gotten the best deal on the construction of the railroad in the area at $1.92 billion.

The $3.8 billion line that Kenya built connecting Mombasa and Nairobi was significantly longer by around 50 kilometers.
