Kenyan Marathon holder Kelvin Kiptum and his coach died in a car accident on February 11.
Survivor Sharon Kosgey recorded a statement with the police, revealing the last moments before the crash and alerting Kiptum of the vehicle’s veering off the road.
The government and well-wishers are helping his widow and children during this difficult time.
The DCI officers investigating the accident have pledged to continue gathering more information about the late Kiptum’s final moments from individuals who were in his vicinity. The findings will be presented to the public upon completion.
“We were able to record a statement with Sharon Kosgey, and we have confirmed that indeed Kiptum was behind the wheel, the investigation is still ongoing, and once we are through with the investigation, we will deliver the findings,” one of the officers noted.
President William Ruto directed experts to build a three-bedroom house for Kelvin Kiptum’s family, instructing that it be done before he is laid to rest, set for February 24.
The engineers assigned will kick off the project on Friday, following consultations with the family members, to ensure the house is ready for handing over before Kiptum’s burial.
Kiptum’s widow speaking to the media after the accident noted that his last promise was to build a house for his family, and had already drafted his architectural plans.
In their efforts to conclude the case, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have so far interviewed three mysterious men. These individuals had visited Kiptum’s family four days before his death, claiming to have been sent by a Chinese company seeking to close a deal with the marathon star.
“Our conscience is clear we know that whatever that we were dealing with was something that was good and would have helped this family,” one of the men stated.
