Peter Ngumbi Mulei: The story of Uneducated founder of Mulleys Supermarket

Peter Ngumbi Mulei founded Mulleys Supermarket in 1969 as a wholesale enterprise. Peter Mulei and Sons didn’t diversify into retail until 2010.

His story is an account of hard work. So Peter Ngumbi Mulei lived to be the prime mover of the economy of Machakos Town and beyond.

From the humble beginnings of a hotel hand, a farm hand in the coffee plantations of Kiambu, Mulei left this world a reasonably endowed. Even then his humility, in spite of who he was or what he owned will remain an all time trade mark.

On his final journey, this humility was the cornerstone of attendance, speeches , and demeanor as speakers, including Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka and Water and Irrigation Minister chose his burial as the venue to underscore their new found unity in the service of the Akamba people.

In attendance were both the rich and the poor from the community- who Peter resonated with, with soothing ease.

Education

The late Peter Mulei attended Masii D.E.B Primary School in the late1930s where he received early instruction in literacy and numeracy.

Unfortunately , he was forced to drop out of school because of the extreme poverty faced by his family and indeed by most of his community at the time.

Following this apparent set-back in life, Peter did what he could in the circumstances and put himself up for hire as a labourer, accepting menial jobs in order to eke out a living.

When Peter Mulei advised his children at family gatherings just before schools opened, his main encouraging words were “Ikia vitii, vitii”.

A man who traveled far, despite being uneducated and unable to speak the language later became his family’s best teacher on the importance of diligence and hard work and he did so by clear example.

He often liked to joke about having to go to school to find it closed, giving that as the reason why he was not learned. Nevertheless, he gave us all the highest level of education by inspiring us to do our best always and never to rest on our laurels.

Peter Mulei was, without a shadow of doubt, a model to be emulated in our society. He shall be sorely missed by his loving family, loyal legion of friends, the church, the business community and by all men and women of goodwill.
