Martha Karua: We will obey the Supreme Court’s ruling on Monday

The coalition would obey the Supreme Court’s ruling in the presidential petition hearing that ended today, according to Martha Karua, the deputy presidential candidate for Kenya’s Azimio la Umoja One party.

In Meru County, Martha Karua gave a speech at the funeral for Florah Kabeti M’Naituli, the mother of Prof. Gitile Naituli, a political adviser for Narc Kenya.

“You are all aware that there is a case at the Supreme Court where we are seeking the truth about what happened. Our Constitution stipulates that if one is dissatisfied with the results, they have to seek legal redress and that is what we did,” Martha Karua said.

Martha Karua stated that they desired to keep peace, but in order to do so, justice had to be served through legal redress.

“When the verdict is out, we all respect that. We want to maintain peace but for this to be achieved there must be justice because peace without justice is not sustainable.” she said.

Raila Odinga, the Azimio presidential candidate, has also stated that he will respect the court’s decision despite his belief that he has won.

On August 22, 2022, Raila Odinga’s Azimio La Umoja One Kenya coalition petitioned the Supreme Court to annul President-Elect William Ruto’s win.

Odinga’s legal team filed a petition saying that a team working for Deputy President William Ruto hacked into the election system and replaced legitimate images of polling station result forms with fake ones, raising Ruto’s percentage of the vote on August 9.

He also complained about a split commission, voter suppression, and differences between votes cast for the president and those cast for other elective positions.

The respondents, including the IEBC, its chairman Wafula Chebukati, and President-elect William Ruto, have all disputed the accusations.

The court will issue its verdict on Monday 5th September, 2022.
