Kikuyu gospel singer Sammy Boy is currently serving a life sentence for robbery with violence at Naivasha Maximum Prison, but he insists he is innocent.
The No Ira Tu hitmaker claims that his woes started when he hosted a friend he says he trusted and knew since childhood. He recalls how the friend called him wanting a place to stay for a while as he gets back to his feet.
The kindhearted Sammy could not leave his friend to suffer in the harsh streets; thus, he decided to help him, without knowing that he had stolen some items and was looking for a place to hide from the police who were trailing him.
Sammy says that he was shocked when the police came to his find and found the stolen items. Upon knowing that the police had found his hideout, the friend took off, leaving Sammy to face the charges on his own.
Sammy explains that he thought the case was not serious because of his innocence but the police implicated him as his friend’s accomplice and he had no other choice than to wait for the police to capture the friend to prove his innocence.
However, fate would take a new turn on Sammy’s hopes of waiting for his friend to be arrested. The friend died in a car accident, and Sammy was convicted solely for robbery with violence.
Sammy discloses that the case was hard for him because he had no lawyer to defend him as he could not afford one. At the end of the case, the court slapped him with a life sentence, something he says he has learned to accept.
He, however, has not tired of defending his innocence. He says he is currently looking to appeal his verdict, hoping that he will earn his freedom, as he rightfully deserves.
To make his prison life easier, he claims that he spends most of his time teaching his fellow inmates about God.
Sammy’s story is drop in the ocean when it comes to innocent people being jailed for wrongs they did not commit.
A few weeks ago, 22-year -old Anne Makena came to the limelight after it emerged that she had been convicted for a crime she had no idea about.
According to Anne, her boss, who owned a wines & spirit store, was selling counterfeit goods. She claimed that the officials took her by surprise when she was arrested for selling counterfeit goods, yet she was only a salesgirl.
Luckily for Anne, she was recently released, and we can only hope that Sammy will also receive his freedom when proven innocent.
