President William Ruto’s administration’s 22 Cabinet Secretaries will each get a gross monthly compensation of Sh924,000.
According to data from the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC), a CS makes a base salary of Sh554,400, a housing allowance of Sh200,000, and a salary market adjustment of Sh169,000 per month.
The CSs will also be eligible for medical coverage that includes one spouse and four children under the age of 25.
According to their medical plan, the inpatient coverage will be Sh10 million, outpatient (Sh300,000), maternity (Sh150,000), dentistry (Sh75,000), and optical (Sh150,000) (Sh75,000).
The ministers will also be eligible for an official vehicle with an engine no bigger than 3000cc. Additionally, they will receive per diem for domestic and international travel at the SRC rates.
The CSs are also eligible for a car loan up to Sh10 million with an annual interest rate of 3%. They would also receive Sh20,000 in monthly airtime allowance.
According to SRC, the ministers are also eligible for an annual leave allowance of Sh50,000 and a mortgage of up to Sh40 million.
President Uhuru Kenyatta’s whole team was dismissed from the Cabinet on Tuesday, September 27, with the exception of Simon Chelugui and Monica Juma.
Under President Kenyatta’s government, Chelugui served as the CS for Labor. He will now serve as the Minister for Cooperatives, Micro, Small, and Medium-size Enterprises.
Ruto has chosen Monica Juma, who previously served as the Defense CS and the Energy Minister under the preceding president’s administration.
Other nominees to the Cabinet include Musalia Mudavadi (Prime Cabinet Secretary), Kithure Kindiki (Interior), Njuguna Ndung’u (Treasury), Aisha Juma (Public Service and Gender), Aden Duale (Defence), Alice Wahome (Water, Sanitation and Irrigation), Alfred Mutua (Foreign Affairs), Moses Kuria (Trade), Rebecca Miano (East African Community), Kipchumba Murkomen (Transport) and Roselinda Soipan Tuya (Environment and Forestry).
The remaining proposed CS office holders are Zachariah Mwangi Njeru (Lands), Penina Malonza (Tourism), Mithika Linturi (Agriculture), Susan Wafula (Health), Eliud Owalo (Information, Communication and Digital Economy), Ezekiel Machogu (Education), Davis Chirchir (Energy) Ababu Namwamba (Sports) Salim Mvurya (Mining) and Florence Bore (Labour).
The National Assembly will review and vote to accept or reject each nominee for Cabinet Secretary.
On Thursday, September 29, President William Ruto will formally inaugurate the 13th Parliament, and Members of Parliament (MPs) and Senators will meet for the first post-swearing-in sitting.
At 2:30 pm, the president will address the Bicameral House.
Between 2013 and 2017, CSs received a total monthly gross salary of Sh1.06 million during President Kenyatta’s first term. In 2017, the SRC reduced this amount to Sh924,000.
