Khaligraph Explains Why He Will Never Perform in Political Campaigns

Kenya’s OG rap star Khaligraph has opened up on why he would perform for political campaigns.

Speaking with Mseto East Africa’s host Willy M Tuva, Khaligraph explained that performing in political campaigns would ruin his career, considering that his fans may have different political preferences from his.

He argued that Kenya’s democracy is not mature enough to accommodate different political opinions. According to him, politics is a sensitive topic in Kenya and would easily result in his fans holding a grudge against him.

“Kenya is not like America, where people move on fast after an election. We are still a developing country and politics is too sensitive for us though we are trying hard to change our attitude,” said Khaligraph.

Adding, “I bet there would people refusing to give me a show because of who I supported during the campaign period. So I better stay away.”

Nonetheless, Khaligraph thinks of joining politics later in his life. He told Tuva that he would want to hold a position that would enable him to fight for people’s rights.

According to him, the presidential seat is the best position to help him realize his mission.

On what he thought about artists joining politics, Khaligraph wished them the best, considering that politics is a difficult field.

Khaligraph’s opinions regarding performing in political campaigns come a day after Tanzania’s kingpin Diamond caused an online stir after he performed at Azimio’s last rally in Kasarani Stadium on Saturday, 7th August.

Many critics were displeased by how Azimio opted to support Tanzanian music and ignored Kenyan artists.

Months ago, the boy band Sauti Sol was in conflict against Azimio after the coalition used its Extravaganza song without permission. Sauti Sol has come out since to insist that they are not interested in performing in politics.
