From Babu Owino to Moses Kuria; What top politicians scored in school

Do you know what your favorite Kenyan politician scored in school?

Some people claim money, power and education don’t go hand-in-hand. Is that always the case?

Recently, billionaire Jimi Wanjigi was disqualified from vying for presidency for failing to present his University degree certificate.

Jimi confirmed to the IEBC, that he was yet to graduate later this year.

Later on, while speaking to the media said he is currently doing his masters degree. At this point, you will be tempted to ask yourself – how did he become such successful without University education?

At 59, Jimi is yet to graduate from a university.

This brings us to this article, how did the Kenyan politician perform in school?

According a research conducted by Pulse Kenya, on the academic performance of some of the prominent politicians in the Kenyan political scene, here are the findings.

1. Musalia Mudavadi

The ANC Leader attended Nairobi School and proceeded to the University of Nairobi where he studied Land Economics.

Mudavadi graduated class of 1984 with a Second Class (Upper Division).

2.  Anyang Nyong’o

The Kisumu Governor complete his undergraduate studies at Makerere University where he was attained a 1st class honours degree in political science.

Nyong’o was later awarded scholarships to attend the University of Chicago where he was awarded his Master’s degree and later a PhD in political science in 1977.

3. Kalonzo Musyoka

The Wiper Leader attended the University of Nairobi alongside a number of prominent individuals who included lawyer Gitobu Imanya, Meru Gpvernor Kiraitu Murungi,Attorney General Kihara Kariuki and Chief Justice David Maraga.

Murungi, Imanyara, and Kihara attained a Second Class (Upper Division) while Maraga and Karogo attained graduated with lower divisions.

4. Prof Kivutha Kibwana

The Makueni Governor is one of the most academically gifted politicians. He attended the University of Nairobi where he graduated class of 1976 with a Second Class (Upper Division).

He later won a scholarships to the University of London and Harvard University where he obtained two master’s degrees in law.

Kibwana also holds a Doctorate in Law from George Washington University.

5. Nancy Gitau

President Uhuru Kenyatta’s political advisor graduated with a First Class Honours in Political Science (class of 1984).

6. Moses Kuria

The vocal MP served as Sonu Treasurer at the University of Nairobi.

He graduated in the class of 1994 with a Second Class (Lower Division).

7. Babu Owino

The Embakasi East MP is still a student at the University of Nairobi where he is taking his second degree in law.

In 2012, he completed his first degree with a First Class honours in Actuarial Science.

8. Moses Wetangula

The Bungoma Senator attained a Bachelor of Laws in the same year as National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi.

They both scored a Second Class Lower Division at UoN class of 1980
