DP Ruto to Chiloba: SIM card registration can wait till December

Deputy President William Ruto has slammed the continuing SIM card registration process, which has seen hundreds of Kenyans queue at mobile phone shops.

The DP said there is no need to hasten the process during the signing of coalition agreements with eight parties at Ngonga Racecourse in Nairobi on Tuesday.

According to Ruto, the country is currently dealing with a variety of challenges that require greater attention than the SIM registration process.

“I want to ask our people in the CA, please, it is not necessary for them to queue for a sim card for them to be registered. We have enough time, what is this magic about Friday?” Ruto asked.

He went on to say that the exercise could be postponed and that the April 15 deadline could be extended.

He went on to say that the exercise could be postponed until December, and that the April 15 deadline could be extended again.

“Unless you are up to no good. If the CA is the agent of the dark force, we want to tell them, they will fail, and they will fail miserably.”

The continuing mandatory SIM card registration has nothing to do with the approaching general elections, according to CA Director General Ezra Chiloba.

According to Chiloba, regulations on SIM card validation were drafted in 2015, thus there is no clear link to the upcoming August elections.

Chiloba was aiming to dispel doubts about the objectivity of the entire procedure, which had been given a time limit.
